OVERVIEW

The WIN Series is a multicultural curriculum crafted to boost communicative competency. It adopts a balanced approach to developing skills in conversation, vocabulary, grammar, phonics, listening, speaking, reading, and writing, empowering learners to use English confidently from the very first unit. The series encourages students to express themselves and think critically. WIN English is a student-centered curriculum featuring relatable images that present  learners to various situations. These relatable and fun characters help students practice language and enhance their English communication skills. Fun and entertaining scenarios mirror real-life situations, allowing students to practice language skills in context. These scenarios and situations encourage the students to interact in a way that feels natural and enjoyable. The themes in the units also encourage critical thinking and self-expression, making the curriculum not only about language acquisition but also about personal growth and cultural understanding.

GLOBAL MARKET DEMANDS

The global market has specifically called for a primary series that bridges the gap between Foreign Language and Second Language Acquisition. Feedback indicated that English as a Foreign Language was too easy, while English as a Second Language was too challenging. Thus, a series that effectively fills this gap was essential. Additionally, the market demanded standards and outcomes that ensure a smooth transition for learners moving across borders and between L1 schools and countries. The curriculum needed to cater to international schools while being paced appropriately for L2 institutions. Since 2021, there has been a significant increase in migration to countries where English is the primary language. This shift has created a substantial demand for literacy programs to support the growing populations. Consequently, there is an urgent need for English language instruction tailored to new learners. This curriculum must meet the needs of a diverse, multicultural student population

CHALLENGES

The mission of taking an ELL series and adapting it to the global market was our biggest challenge. Understanding and respecting the diverse traditions, cultural norms, religious requirements, and accepted behaviors of different countries is essential. Although this was our biggest challenge, achieving it is our biggest accomplishment. Embracing this diversity not only fosters mutual respect and understanding but also enriches our global community. By acknowledging and valuing these differences, we can create a more inclusive and harmonious world. Meed Educational Publishers conducted extensive research about clothing, traditions, holidays, and festivals and authored the series in a way that accommodates specific policies and conventions of the particular Ministries of Education. WIN English was also built to be flexible with global education systems and cultural practices so that the books can be modified and localized to a particular region.
Another challenge is accommodating multi-level classrooms. Not all school systems can initiate multi-level or leveled learning. So this had to be considered when developing the curriculum.

OUR APPROACH

Our Subject specialists and curriculum research team gathered information on standards and outcomes from around the world. We focused on Canada, USA, UK, Australia, countries in the Middle East and Africa, as well as Eastern, Western, and Central Europe, and made a comparison of their goals. From this information, we consolidated these outcomes to ensure that the elements of the series provided a smooth transition to and from L1 and L2 countries and/or institutions. Win English was designed to be aligned with the Common European Framework, Common Core Standards (USA), as they encompassed all the objectives of the didactic plans of the other L2 countries. Our Subject Matter Experts developed the mapping of the objectives to make sure that the objectives delivered were developmentally, socially, age, and emotionally appropriate for the target learner. Furthermore, experts were commissioned to examine and validate the adventures, authentic situations, diversity, character, and morality of the units, and that they comply with global values. The books were based on 30 active weeks of learning, and the instructional designers mapped the books to meet the outcomes of each unit within two weeks. The books follow the learning methodology of IMPACT, Introduce, Model, Practice,ApplyCollaborate, Think. This 21st Century skills methodology ensures that the students hae a well rounded exposure to the objectives, all while broadening their knowledge, skills, work habits, and character traits that are considered essential for success in today’s world
WIN English units recycle the information in other units to reinforce the skill. It also provides a variety of differentiation to encompass all learners. Design thinking is also included to help the student respond and communicate in real-life situations. It is a well-rounded process. Units are attractive to the age group and activate prior knowledge to encourage communication. WIN English doesn’t just “teach” the language; it teaches the learner how to “use” the language. Each unit is horizontal and not scaffolded so that teacher has the freedom to move around the book and choose the units that are the most effective and interesting for the class. The resources and the teacher’s guide are very comprehensive. An instructor with little to no experience, as well as the seasoned instructor, benefit from the delivery guide, extra activities, and ideas in the teacher’s guide.
